Halfway through my senior year at Middlebury College, I began to fully realize that my post-graduate plans were both uncomfortably indefinite and fairly unexciting. I considered the archetypal desk job in New York City or Boston. I considered a return to my hometown of Bozeman, MT to work anywhere that would have me. But in all of my searches, I failed to find anything that truly excited me. In my pursuit of something, anything, that would fiercely and relentlessly seize my attention, I found my way to Grassroot Soccer, to a commitment to work for an entire year in one of a variety of different locations spread throughout southern Africa. My yearlong placement would be announced one week before I left for the site, in front of the entire South African staff. This is my best, albeit admittedly meager, chronicle of this experience.
